What Are Canada's IRCC Special Measures for Iranians in 2026?

In response to the ongoing instability in Iran, Canada first introduced emergency immigration support for Iranian nationals in February 2023. As of March 1, 2026, IRCC has renewed and narrowed those measures specifically for Iranian work permit holders already inside Canada.

What this means for you: if you hold a valid Canadian work permit issued on or before February 28, 2025, you may apply to extend it by up to two years from inside Canada, without leaving the country with a submission deadline of March 31, 2027.

This is not a new visa category. It is not a pathway that starts from zero. It is a direct, government-approved in-Canada extension of your existing status designed specifically for Iranian nationals in your situation.

Who Qualifies for the Iranian Work Permit Extension? (Full Eligibility Checklist)

Under the 2026 IRCC special measures, every single one of the following conditions must apply to you:

If even one of these conditions does not apply, you do not qualify under this specific measure. This is exactly why a professional review of your immigration file before applying is not optional it is essential.

How Long Is the Extension? What Does It Cover?

Eligible Iranian nationals can receive a work permit extension of up to two years.

Two more years of legal work authorization. Two more years of Canadian income. Two more years of Canadian work experience, which is one of the most powerful assets you can accumulate toward Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) permanent residence applications.

Important: Check your passport expiry date now. IRCC cannot issue a work permit that extends beyond your passport’s validity. If your passport expires within two years, renew it before applying so you don’t lose months from your extension.

What Is "Maintained Status" And Why Does It Protect You?

One of the most common fears we hear from Iranian workers in Canada is: “What happens if my work permit expires while IRCC is still processing my application?”

Here is the reassuring answer: if you submit your extension application before your current work permit expires, you are automatically protected under maintained status (also called “implied status”). Under maintained status, you can legally continue living and working in Canada while IRCC processes your file even if your permit expiry date has passed.

But there is a critical condition: you must apply before your permit expires. The moment your permit lapses without an active application on record, you lose maintained status, you lose your legal right to work, and this extension pathway closes permanently.

Do not wait. Do not assume you have more time than you do.

Application Fees

Work permit processing: $155 | Open work permit holder fee: $100 | Biometrics (if required): $85/person or up to $170/family These are official IRCC fees.

Our professional service fee is $199 flat, transparent, and confirmed before we begin.

What If I Am on a Visitor Record or Study Permit?

As of March 1, 2026, Iranian nationals on visitor records or study permits are no longer eligible for these special measures. IRCC narrowed the program specifically to work permit holders in the 2026 update.

If you are a student or visitor, you are not without options but your path is through the standard IRCC application process. Contact our team and we will honestly assess what realistic options exist for your specific profile.

The Risk of Applying Without Professional Help

The IRCC online application looks simple. Many people assume they can handle it alone. But here is what we see regularly:

Wrong timing

Applying when your permit is too close to expiry or after it has already expired results in refusal.

Missing documents.

IRCC can refuse your application if anything is missing, even if your case is otherwise strong.

Wrong form selection

Choosing the wrong application type is one of the most common and most costly errors in Canadian immigration.

Errors that compound

A refused application becomes a permanent part of your immigration history. It is reviewed in every future application you make, and it raises red flags with IRCC officers.

The government fees alone range from $155 to $340. A refusal wastes that money, wastes months of processing time, and most seriously weakens your standing for every future immigration step in Canada. A professional who knows this process eliminates these risks.

Why You Must Act Now | Not on the Policy Deadline

March 31, 2027 is the policy deadline. But your personal deadline is your permit’s expiry date not the policy cutoff.

If your work permit expires in 90 days, you have 90 days to apply under maintained status protection. After that window, you fall out of status and this pathway is permanently closed to you. Every day you delay is a day of legal protection you cannot recover.

The right time to act is now while your permit is valid and your options are fully open.
